Acid Wash Hoodies

Hoodie Manufacturing
The tech pack you see most frequently isn't a detailed specification; it's a reference photo and "something like this but heavier." That's fine, since most of the important variables of your hoodie program will be defined in the feasibility check process, including fleece weight, wash finish type, construction specifications, and whether your print/embroidery is done pre or post-wash. Following is the complete list of the various materials that we use in building hoodies, as well as how the three wash programs (acid, snow, vintage) differ in reality. The goal is to be able to get your first message as close as possible to the true specification.
There are no similarities among the three wash programs once they're seen side by side, despite the fact that "distressed hoodie" refers to all three in colloquial terms. The high-contrast marbling of the acid wash finish. The frosted mottling of the snow wash finish. The years-worn, faded finish of the vintage wash finish, applied mostly to areas of wear. Choosing the wrong one based on a reference photo is the most frequent cause for a first sample requiring revision.
Marbled effect, contrasting shades ranging from soft to intense. 400gsm fleece is the standard fabric weight utilized for this line of processing.
Mottling effect, softer and less contrasting compared to acid wash. Generally uses 350gsm terry cloth as the fabric base.
Wear-and-tear fading focused around seams and worn areas, more like actual years of wear than a wash effect.
There are numerous variables in terms of the wash treatment choice, and there are construction choices, which don’t affect either the minimum order quantity or the lead time and are listed separately in the tech pack next to the wash type. The common constructions include pullover and full zip, the presence or lack of the kangaroo pocket, the choice of rib or raw hem, and drawcord options (flat cord, round cord, or metal-tipped).
The major point of divergence between the three programs in terms of the construction choice is fabric weight. The base fabric for the acid wash is 400gsm heavy-weight fleece. This type of material allows for better contrast due to the marbling of the fabric during the washing process and also makes the product less prone to pilling. The snow wash usually uses 350gsm terry. This is because the frosting effect is seen better on this fabric compared to a lighter one. Finally, the vintage wash uses various weights of fabrics, starting from 280gsm French terry to 400gsm fleece. The former gives the product a more worn-out look resembling that of a T-shirt, and the latter adds more structure to it.
All fabrics and dye lots for each of the three styles must meet OEKO-TEX Standard 100 specifications concerning levels of hazardous chemicals – azo dyes, formaldehyde, heavy metals, and the other criteria contained within that specification. This does not apply exclusively to hoodies, but it is important to note because washing and distressing require much more chemical interaction than regular clothing does.
The final component of tech packs for these items is trims and hardware. They may seem like unimportant details when creating tech packs, but they are the kind of thing that makes people think of off-brand samples when there are little discrepancies. Drawstrings may be flat or round, coordinating or contrasting in color, with either metal tips, plastic tips, or no tips. Cuffs and waistbands can have ribbing that is either 2x2 or 1x1. Neck labels, care labels, and hang tags are specified separately from the garment – none of this is difficult information, but a hoodie with the correct wash and incorrect drawstrings will always seem to be an off-brand sample.
Screen printing, puff printing, embroidery, and digital printing are all options that can be applied to any of the three types of washes. Timing is important here as well, in that the decorating comes after the wash and dry cycle, when the fabric has already been made to shrink and develop its feel, not before. There is the potential for distortion by putting the print onto the fabric prior to the washing process, in that a properly sized chest logo prior to wash could become noticeably distorted by the wash cycle, such as an acid wash. More information regarding capabilities by technique is available at printing & embellishment capabilities.
50 pcs per style and per color, regardless of the wash program used and whatever construction choice is made - the MOQ doesn't vary depending on the type of wash and weight of the fabric chosen. However, the unit price does vary because the price varies depending on the weight of the fleece, type of wash, and decorations applied. Details on the entire price structure, quantity discounts, and factors that increase/decrease prices are provided in MOQ & pricing, applicable to all product categories, not only to hoodies.
The most challenging technical task when implementing a wash program is not obtaining the required result from one piece of clothing but guaranteeing it throughout all 500 pieces. In essence, acid and snow washes imply certain randomness of the procedure that demands maintaining appropriate conditions in the drum, the amount of clothing being washed, and the time of the washing. All bulk orders are being compared to the sample in the same lighting conditions, which helps spot any alterations in the washing formula long before the final check of the quality control; finding out the problem in the second day of processing will be much cheaper than after completing the whole batch of orders.
Colorfastness testing of clothes is another issue of quality assurance that is unrelated to maintaining consistency of the wash results. If the shirt looks good as produced but bleeds its colors at the first wash at home, many returns are expected, and this effect is especially visible in the case of heavily processed fabrics. The rub and wash colorfastness test is part of the pre-shipment inspection of all orders of the wash programs, not a separate paid additional service – it is checked along with stitching, measuring and trims during AQL 2.5/4.0 testing.
Customers who bring in a specific photo reference typically already know the program they require, though they might not be able to identify it by name. For all other customers, the choice between the three depends on the intended look of the final product. Acid wash gives a distinct and high-contrast look and is the finish associated with the revival of early 2000s streetwear fashion. This program is suitable for statement pieces rather than basics, as snow wash would be. Vintage wash has a similar quality but in a more subdued way and is meant to give a look that suggests that the piece has been worn in and loved rather than that it was chemically treated. There is nothing that makes any one of the programs more challenging to manufacture than the others; the selection of the correct one depends only on the intended communication of the finished piece when hanging on a rack among the rest of the line.
If the choice cannot be made easily, it would be better to provide two or three examples of photos to be used in conjunction with the tech pack, since "distressed" means something different for each company.
It is not unusual, either, for a single line to use two or more of the wash programs for different garments. Each program requires separate sampling and pricing due to different treatment of the fabric and QC checkpoints, though the customer is under no obligation to choose the same wash program for the whole batch.
