How DTG and DTF Digital Printing Actually Work

A 40-color photographic gradient came in on a jacket back panel last spring — no screen print shop would touch it under 500 pieces, and the buyer needed 30. We ran it as DTG instead, straight off the proof file, no screens, no color separation cost. That's the case for digital printing in one sentence: it charges by pixel coverage, not by color count, which changes what's worth ordering at low volume.

"Digital printing" on our floor covers two different production methods that get lumped together — DTG (direct-to-garment) and DTF (direct-to-film). They use different equipment, suit different fabrics, and hold up differently over time. Buyers usually come to us already knowing they want "digital," but not which of the two they actually need, and the wrong pick shows up later as either a higher unit cost than necessary or a print that doesn't survive the fabric it's on. How DTG printing works

Direct-to-garment

DTG is closer to a large-format inkjet than a print press. The garment is loaded flat on a pallet, pretreatment solution is sprayed onto the print area to keep the pigment from bleeding into the weave and to help it bond to cotton fibers, then the piece is pressed briefly to dry the pretreatment and flatten the nap. The printhead then lays down CMYK plus a white underbase in a single pass, straight from the artwork file — there's no film, no screens, no plate registration to line up.

Because color comes from ink droplets rather than physical screens, a photographic gradient prints in the same pass as a flat logo, at the same cost. The trade-off is fabric: DTG pigment ink needs at least 80% cotton content to bond and hold color properly, which is why it's not used on poly-heavy performance fabric. Cure is a heat tunnel at roughly 160°C for about 90 seconds — under-cure and the print cracks in the first few washes, over-cure and the fabric can yellow or scorch, so the tunnel is checked against a wash-test sample before any bulk run starts.

A standard A3-size front graphic runs about 60 to 90 seconds through the printhead itself, not counting pretreatment and cure time — quick enough that a five-piece sample order and a 300-piece production run cost the same per-piece in print time, which is the opposite of how screen printing scales. The inks themselves are water-based pigment, not the plastisol used in screen printing, so the print sits lower in the fabric and stays breathable rather than forming a surface film. We run OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified inks on both DTG and DTF lines, which matters for buyers whose retail partners require documented proof that a finished garment has been tested for harmful substances, not just a verbal assurance.

How DTF printing works

Direct-to-film

DTF doesn't print onto the garment at all — the design prints in reverse onto a PET transfer film, white ink laid down as an underbase beneath the CMYK layers so the color reads correctly on dark fabric. While the ink is still wet, hot-melt adhesive powder is shaken across the film and the excess shaken off, then the film runs through a small curing oven that melts the powder into a bonding layer without setting the ink underneath.

The cured film gets heat-pressed onto the actual garment — around 160°C, roughly 15 seconds, medium-firm pressure — and the film backing is peeled off once it's cooled, taking the carrier layer with it and leaving the ink and adhesive bonded to the fabric. Because the bond is mechanical (adhesive to fiber) rather than chemical (pigment to cotton), DTF doesn't need pretreatment and isn't picky about fiber content: cotton, polyester, poly-cotton blends and nylon shell panels all take a DTF transfer the same way. The trade-off is hand feel — the adhesive layer sits slightly thicker than DTG, closer to a soft vinyl than a dyed print.

One practical advantage rarely mentioned outside the print room: because the film is printed and cured as a separate step from pressing, a batch of transfers can be printed in advance and stored flat until the garments they're going on are ready — a point the industry body FESPA covers in its own technical explainer on DTF. That decoupling is why DTF has become the default for mixed small-batch orders — 15 pieces of one design and 40 of another can share a single press schedule instead of waiting on separate garment pretreatment runs.

Ink safety and how we check durability

Not just a claim on a spec sheet

Printing method doesn't change a garment's flammability classification — that's governed by the base fabric, and covered under the CPSC's Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles, 16 CFR Part 1610, which applies whether or not a garment carries a print. What printing does affect is whether a finished piece still meets OEKO-TEX's harmful-substance limits after ink and adhesive are added, which is why we test on the printed garment, not just the blank.

Durability claims get checked the same way the industry checks them, not by eye. Wash-fastness follows the accelerated laundering methodology used across AATCC's colorfastness test methods — a printed swatch goes through repeated wash cycles and gets graded against a reference scale for cracking, fading and dye transfer onto adjacent fabric, before a design is cleared for bulk production. It's a small extra step on the sampling timeline, but it's the difference between quoting a wash-durability number and actually knowing it holds for a specific ink-on-fabric combination.

When digital printing is the right call

And when it isn't

Digital earns its place on orders where the design has more colors or gradient detail than a screen print budget can justify, or where the run is small enough that screen setup cost would dominate the unit price. It's also the practical choice for sample runs and pre-production proofs, since a design can be tested at a single piece with zero setup waste. Where screen printing still wins: large flat-color runs at volume, where the ink cost per piece drops well below digital once screens are already burned, and jobs that need an exact spot-color Pantone match rather than a CMYK approximation.

In practice, most of the brands we work with end up using both methods across a single seasonal drop rather than picking one. A hero graphic with a photographic print or gradient goes digital; a repeated flat-color chest logo across the whole run goes screen, once the piece count justifies burning a screen. Mixed-fiber pieces — a poly-cotton fleece, a nylon-paneled jacket — usually default to DTF regardless of print complexity, simply because DTG can't hold color on that fiber content reliably. And when a buyer is still deciding between two or three design directions before committing to a full run, we'll often quote the whole capsule as DTG or DTF samples first, since there's no setup cost to walk away from if a design doesn't test well.

What's the actual difference between DTG and DTF printing?

Is there a minimum order for digital printing?
